Discover the story behind Australia's premier gaming exhibition and the passionate team making it happen.
Melbourne Pixel Expo began in 2020 as a grassroots gathering of passionate indie developers in a small community center in Fitzroy. Founded by Sarah Chen and Marcus Wong, the inaugural event featured just 15 game developers and attracted around 500 local gaming enthusiasts. Despite its modest scale, the event created an electric atmosphere of creativity and community that would define its future.
Between 2022 and 2024, Melbourne Pixel Expo experienced exponential growth as word spread throughout Australia's gaming community. Moving to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre in 2023 allowed us to welcome international developers and introduce competitive esports tournaments. Attendance surged to over 8,000 visitors, and major industry sponsors began taking notice of our unique approach to celebrating gaming culture.
Now in 2026, Melbourne Pixel Expo has evolved into Australia's premier gaming exhibition while maintaining its core values of accessibility, diversity, and community. With over 15,000 annual attendees, 200+ exhibitors, and international recognition, we've become a pivotal event in the Asia-Pacific gaming calendar. Despite our growth, we remain committed to providing a platform for independent developers alongside industry giants, fostering connections that drive innovation in gaming.

Indie Game Developer
"Showcasing my game at Melbourne Pixel Expo was a turning point for my career. The connections I made with publishers and fellow developers were invaluable, and the feedback from players helped refine my game significantly. Within months of exhibiting, I secured funding to complete development and now have a thriving studio. This expo truly understands and supports indie developers like no other event in Australia."
Studio Executive, Nexus Games
"As a major publisher, we've participated in gaming events worldwide, but Melbourne Pixel Expo stands out for its perfect balance between industry networking and genuine player engagement. The organization is flawless, the audience is diverse and enthusiastic, and the atmosphere encourages meaningful interaction rather than just marketing. It's become a fixture in our annual calendar for announcing new titles and connecting with the Oceania gaming community."
